FREAK ACCIDENT KILLS TODDLER

By Abisola Abiola

The family of the 22-month-old toddler who allegedly died at the hands of a 14-year-old boy, who at the time was in operation of a motor vehicle, is still in shock and dismay over the unfortunate incident.

The freak accident reportedly occurred on Saturday, July 3rd.

According to reports the juvenile was asked to clean a motorcar by one of his neighbours in Fountain Village. This newspaper understands that the said car was parked in the yard of the undisclosed neighbour. The individual who tasked the juvenile to clean the car left the keys in the ignition and while attempting to move it [the car] from its fixed position the vehicle ran over the toddler. She was subsequently rushed to the Alexandra Hospital in private transportation for treatment and succumbed to her injuries while there.

According to Sergeant Everton Mitcham, stationed at the New Castle Police Station, the mother of the infant Teresia Rawlins as of Monday was visibly upset and still in shock. He also indicated that the juvenile fathered by Carlisle Clarke is still in police custody and as of Wednesday has not been charged.

The constable warned that “adults on a whole, we should be more careful, when we leave the key in the ignition and giving a juvenile access to that vehicle is trouble,” he warned.

According to a communiqué released by the police force, on July 3rd at about 5:20 p.m., the Police in New Castle District responded to a report, where a one year old female child was run over by a motor car. The incident allegedly occurred on private premises at Fountain Village.  The child was transported to the Alexandra Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. On Monday July 5th, an autopsy was conducted on the body of the deceased by Resident Pathologist Dr. Adrian Nunez, who determined that death was due to hypovolemic shock consequent to injuries by a motor vehicle. Hypovolemic shock is a particular form of shock in which the heart is unable to supply enough blood to the body. It is caused by blood loss or inadequate blood volume.

One male juvenile is assisting with the investigation.

The question many are now asking, who will be charged, the Juvenile or the person who asked him to clean his/her vehicle and left the key in the ignition or would the juvenile be charged at all? When asked to comment on these questions, members of the Nevis Police Force said they are unable to comment because they are still investigating the case.
