Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry for another year - as the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) celebrates its 4th anniversary in government - giving God thanks for guiding Nevis through the economic challenges which the island faced. NRP has had four years of hard work, four years of togetherness and four years of positive changes. Four Seasons Resort Nevis has been closed for two years and things have been tough financially for the island. However, despite the loss of jobs and trying economic times in Nevis, the Premier ensured that a number of Four Seasons’ workers were gainfully employed; many in the construction of homes in the Cherry Gardens housing development project where 115 affordable homes have been built. Others elsewhere one the island where almost 300 affordable homes have been built since NRP took office. A number of Four Seasons’ workers have also been employed in the civil service. According to the Premier, it was important to note that while workers were laid off regionally and internationally, the NRP led Administration managed to keep all of its employees hired with full pay. Four years might seem like a short time but the hard work and dedication portrayed by Premier Parry and his team is worth thunderous applause. As the party continue to celebrate its era in government they will journey to New York, Toronto and Miami in the coming week to discuss pertinent issues with the Nevisian public there. The delegation will also seek to clear lingering questions pertaining to Nevis Express and its bankruptcy and the commission of inquiry among others (see page 11 for full details) Brief History After the M.V. Christena Disaster of August 1st 1970, a group of men and women from around the island of Nevis came together and dedicated their lives to serve and improve the lives of all Nevisians. Ivor Stevens, Uhral Swanston, Ralph Harris, Horace Liburd, Rohan Liburd, Carlton Parris, Gilbert Phillip, Eustace Nisbett, Eustace Hanley, William Challenger, Georgette Seabrookes, Edward Roper, Annie Mills, and Walton Parris are among the outstanding patriots who formed the Nevis Reformation Party. The 1970's were tough years for N.R.P. The party controlled the Nevis Local Council, a local body introduced in the 1967 Statehood Constitution by the Premier, Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw to appease the Nevisians cry for a direct status with Britain. The Local Council had little power. It was given a subvention of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000.00) annually but it was only released to The Local Council in late November or early December every year. This was mainly the reason for the Nevis Reformation Party Government's push for direct status with Great Britain. When the talk for independence was ongoing with the U.K, the NRP Government under the leadership of Dr. Simeon Daniel then formed the Federal Government and was instrumental in having the constitution structured, such that it still gave Nevis an option of independence when the island was ready and the majority of the people desired it. Following many years of challenges to date, the party remains strong and pro-active with a group of men and women who work for the Nevisian people and with the Nevisian people in making life easier. On July 10 2010 they celebrated another year of unwavering team effort to help make the island of Nevis what is visible before you today. |
